Belstaff Biker Jacket / TIALS ‘Pom Pom’ Dress * / FAIIINT Faux Fur Snood / Topshop Boutique Boots / Balenciaga City
This dress from Bali based label TIALS makes me feel like some kind of gothy cheerleader, with it’s satin godets & a-line shape, and I mean that in the best possible way! There’s nothing like slipping on something a little fun when it’s such a miserable day. I had to throw my Belstaff on over the top to toughen it up a bit though.
Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s wondered why dresses all seem to be so short these days? Or am I just getting old? I hate the idea of being ‘too old’ to wear certain things, I say wear whatever you feel comfortable in, but I have to admit over the past few years I’ve been debating whether I am now over the age for wearing mini dresses & skirts like this one.
I can’t escape the fact I’ve started feeling more & more self-conscious in such short styles recently, finding myself constantly tugging at the hems & pulling them down, and my long torso doesn’t help either, making dresses a good few centimeters shorter on me than they’re supposed to be. I think I can still just get away with this one, thanks to the fullness which stops it from feeling too revealing, but I think the time has come to clear out my more fitted mini styles, which have been unworn for months & months now.

Oh I love that biker jacket! I wouldn’t worry about being too old to wear something, wear what you like! I’ll be 35 soon and don’t give a toss what others think ;)

The short skirt and dress styles definitely add youthfulness to some degree but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you (: It suits you a lot, besides shorter skirts make your legs look longer :3

I’ve had the same thought about shorts. Either I’m getting older or shorts are getting shorter. Like I don’t mind a good pair of short shorts but some are WAY too short. And then there are ones that are way to long that make me feel like an old lady lol
Anyway I love this dress. It’s a great grab and go type of dress.

The length is fine, you are too young to care about lengths plus you made it look decent by adding the black tights. It’s good that you feel self conscious occasionally (so that you don’t end up looking “cheap”) but in this case i believe there is the perfect equilibrium between sexy and preppy. Good job! ^^

The use of layers and tights make this look quite lovely ;)

Oooh, this dress is so sweet! Yay for gothic cheerleaders! ;) Omgosh, I was having this conversation with Brownie the other day. I couldn’t work out if it was because we were getting old or if dresses were getting shorter…Now I know it’s the latter. I actually find dress shopping a chore for this very reason. Petite girls are so lucky! I love a lot of Aussie brands but those girls are so used to being at the beach all the time and wearing teeny shorts, length isn’t an issue!

Not at all I find dresses far to short these days, I thought it was just me! Totally ruins a great dress by making it too short. I’m in love with your faux fur snoods!

You look lovely here but I know what you mean about things being too short, I am always tugging my hem down!

i love the satin panels on this dress! looking amazing here steph. i’ve often wondered the same about myself and my collection of tiny shorts – lol. i don’t really have ultra mini dresses but this length doesn’t look too short on you at all! when i do wear something like this it’s not usually the length that bothers me, it’s the crazy winds we get in sydney.. x

I totally agree about the dresses! Skirts too actually. I’ve started to realise most of my clothing is not quite appropriate for Sydney work life so I’ve been trying to update it rather rapidly while I search for work and it is more difficult than I’d anticipated. I LOVE the dress on you though, the flared skirt is really whimsical and offset well with your leather jacket x

I feel the same, it’s why I’m always in jeans! I swear things are getting shorter. Not that you have anything to worry about, you look gorgeous! Your jacket definitely gives it a bit of an edge too xxx

You look gorgeous Steph, short hemline or no short hemline! This dress suits you so much, I really love the silk inserts making it a bit different. Someone came into work yesterday with this lovely long jumper on, it was a soft mid grey colour with dark grey silk inserts – I swooned! I know exactly what you mean about feeling conscious in mini dresses and skirts, I used to live in short dresses and the like for nights out when I was a bit younger but nowadays I steer clear mostly. I think there’s such a fine line between being carefree and confident enough to wear what you want, and wearing something that isn’t age appropriate. But I definitely think you’re young and pretty enough to get away with shorter hemlines for a good while yet, so long as you feel comfortable :) I think it is a case of finding the right style – I feel much more comfortable in a fuller skirt, it does feel less revealing than a fitted one. I have to say, your hair is looking luscious! xxx

Pause for thought. I’m not one for the concept of ‘too old for…’ but maybe that’s because I like a pretty short skirt. I stayed wrapped up in my teen years (think baggy boy grunge) so perhaps I’m getting revenge! I admit though that the way I’ve wear my miniskirts and minidresses is changing. These days I lean towards boxy tops, oversized jackets and high crewnecks to balance short hemlines.
I entirely agree with the sentiment of feeing good, right and comfortable in what you wear. If that’s what’s prompting a change, play with it and see. A bit of change is often just right.
