ASOS Cateye Sunglasses / Belle’s Bejewelled Diamond Necklace *
Steven Pinker ‘The Better Angels of Our Nature‘ / Jean-Baptiste de Panafieu ‘Evolution in Action‘
Ollie has had a lot going on recently & we are unable to shoot any outfits until next week, so I’m afraid you’re going to have to put up with my attempts at photographing a few of my current favourite things instead. To be honest, I’m actually quite pleased with how these turned out, maybe I’m not as terrible at it as I thought…
These sunglasses from ASOS have been firmly at the top of my wishlist since I saw them a few months ago, I fell in love with the super sharp cateye shape & the thick, glossy frames. Unsurprisingly, they sold out pretty quickly & I have been stalking ASOS since, hoping for a pair to come back in stock. A lone pair appeared on Monday, so of course I snapped them up immediately. I’m so glad I did, the plastic is thick & weighty and they look much more expensive than the £12 they cost. Definitely my new favourites. I’ve also fallen in love with this geometric diamond necklace from Belle’s Bejewelled. Ollie thinks it looks like an artifact from Tomb Raider, and I kinda have to agree. Are you noticing a theme around here? I’m a little obsessed with wearable objects that remind me of my favourite movies, video games & books.
I know books aren’t really fashion but I enjoyed these two so much I just had to feature them. ‘Evolution in Action‘ is one of the most beautiful looking books I’ve come across in a long time. Patrick Gries‘ black & white photos of the bones & skeletons of all manner of species are breathtaking & beautifully illustrate the key themes in the text, which is completely engrossing & full of interesting facts. I could not put this down once I started. Evolution, and anatomy especially, have always been subjects that have fascinated & inspired me, and I know this is a book I’ll be picking up again & again.
‘The Better Angels of Our Nature‘ by Steven Pinker is another book I’ve been finding really hard to put down. Do you ever find yourself enjoying a book so much, that as you get closer & closer to the end you start reading just a few pages at a time, because you really don’t want to finish it? Well, that’s what I’ve been doing with this one. If you’re the type of person that thinks the world is going to shit, and that humankind is racing towards exterminating itself with it’s seemingly endless inhumanity, I highly suggest giving this a read. It charts the dramatic decline in violence over the course of history & proves without a doubt that we are currently living in the most peaceful time in human history. Shocking right? Especially when all the awful news stories would have you believe we are at our worst. It’s totally changed the way I see the world, for the better, and is a truly fascinating, mind altering read.
PS: Would you guys like to see more non-fashion things around here? Like books, movies, beauty or more general lifestyle posts? Or do you prefer just fashion & outfits? I’ve been curious about this for a while…

I may have to get my hands on both books..
You did a very nice job with the photographs. :)

I honestly couldn’t recommend them both more! The Better Angels of Our Nature is one I know wouldn’t be everyones cup of tea, it’s 1000+ pages & quite dense, with lots of statistics & graphs, but his writing style makes it a really enjoyable read, if the topic is something that interests you. Do let me know what you think of them if you do get them! :)

I forgot to respond to your question – yes, personally I enjoy seeing lifestyle posts on my favorite style blogs. Go for it!

My two cents is that you post what brings you joy as well. But I love what you are doing thus far.

Let me start with a HELL YES to seeing more general lifestyle posting – but don’t get me wrong – I ADORE your style posts, they’re always such a breath of fresh air from the masses of skort and Proenza Schouler bag posts I inevitably come across (not hating on the bag – I would love to own one myself..) I am a HUGE lover of books, especially coffee table ones so I am definitely adding the ‘Evolution in Action’ to my collection. And the last story has me intrigued, I suppose we really are living in a peaceful state, I’ve also noticed that we’re becoming a society that is pushing for positivity, though I have also noticed how Australians seem to be lagging in that regard. The rest of the world encourages kindness and happiness to their neighbors, especially in the USA, but unfortunately we are yet to grow in that way. I’m hopeful that one day we will!

Aw, Sonia that’s so nice! I’m glad they’re a breath of fresh air to you, I always feel a bit like maybe my outfits might be a bit boring for others, as they’re always quite similar & I have a very constant ‘look’ unlike other bloggers who are always mixing it up, so that’s really nice to hear :)
That’s also really interesting you say that about Australians, I always think of Aussies as being super friendly, almost similar to the US. I guess that’s the stereotype that the rest of the world has of you, all surfers & BBQs! I agree tho, it’s really nice when you think about how much the world is pushing for positivity & kindness, I think people have a very romantic view of history & forget all of the awful, awful things that were commonplace in those days.

These pictures are so pretty Steph, you should be proud! ;) That necklace is absolutely amazing, it’s just so unique and totally you. I love it when I’m that into a book, I’m a bit gutted to be nearing the end of The Hunger Games trilogy so I’m trying to slow down haha. <3 xo

i can totally see you rocking these cateyes! i personally like non-fashion related posts occasionally too. nice when you haven’t had many opportunities to take pictures of outfits. i know some bloggers are self-timer experts, but i’d much rather my boyf do all the work for me (hehe). love that anatomy / skull spread you have in the third picture. i’ve been trying to look for my next skull to stick swarovski crystals all over, if a replica of that (can’t tell what animal that is) existed it would be perfect!! x
FAIIINT says
Haha! I’m the same! I can’t stand the self timer, I find it so frustrating! I just checked what it was & it says it’s a ‘Mandrillus sphinx’ or Mandrill. I hope you find a replica, that sounds amazing! I’m looking for some cool ones for my desk too, I found an awesome real coyote skull, but couldn’t get it shipped here :(
