After what feels like an eternity of winter, over the weekend we finally got our first taste of spring! I’m not the type of person who likes to be out in the sun excessively & actually, you’ll usually find me hiding from it in the shade. I guess that’s pretty obvious by my milky complexion, but I have to admit it was amazing to finally be able to go out without a coat or jacket & feel the warmth on your skin.

I’ve had this tee from MeeMee for a little while now & have been wearing it a lot. The wet look finish is great on it’s own, perfect for texture mixing, but the geometric mesh cut outs are what made me choose it & the weekend was the perfect excuse to show the awesome shoulder detail off. I’m a bit off a tee collector, and this is a dream one for me – slouchy fit, interesting texture, mesh, cut outs, all of my favourite little details all rolled into one.

Ever since I heard Georgia Hardinge would be creating a collection for River Island’s Design Forum I’ve been desperate to get my hands on a few pieces. I then saw the short film released during London Fashion Week & learned that the capsule collection of 14 pieces was inspired by H.R. Gigers paintings & sculptures. I don’t usually do print, but being the huge sci-fi nerd that you all know I am & the fact the prints reminded me of the Xenomorphs from the Alien series (one of Gigers creations) had me sold immediately!

I finally bagged these leggings & also the t-shirt dress in the same print, I wanted to get the pale grey pleated neoprene dress too, but talked myself out of it, knowing I wouldn’t get much wear from it with it being so pristinely pale & me being so messy! Practicality is a huge aspect of why I wear mostly black.

I kept the rest of the look simple, pairing them with my favourite, worn to death Todd Lynn for Topshop tux & my handmade skirt. I’m wearing this skirt more & more recently, the little details like the notches make all the difference to an otherwise plain skirt & the stretch twill I made it from is the most lovely fabric, I really need to buy some more & make a few more things with it!

It’ll come as no surprise that I’m excited about all of the oriental influences that seemed to show up everywhere on the Spring/Summer catwalks, being a bit of a Japanophile myself. I’ve taken inspiration from traditional oriental dress, particularly from China & Japan, many times for my own projects at college & university. I always preferred the mens garments though, they still have those lovely crisp, distinctive silhouettes, but without the fussiness of all the prints & decoration that you usually associate with this kind of dress.

It’s a more relaxed, minimal take & it’s great to see so much of it about for Spring. There are so many pieces I’ve got bookmarked to buy, but these are just a few of my favourites. I like that most pieces just hint at the inspiration with their high mandarin collars, wrapped fronts & origami inspired folding, it’s so subtle. There’s nothing worse than looking like you’ve dressed head to toe in the new seasons trend, but these pieces are timeless & would slot effortlessly into my current wardrobe.
